Arezzo is a province of Tuscany recently made famous in the United States due to the success of Francis Meye's best selling
book, Under the Tuscan Sun. Restoring an ancient Tuscan farmhouse in nearby Cortona, the popular book describes her
colorful adventure with "La Dolce Vita".
Rolling through the countryside of Arezzo we are going to discover a different Tuscany. Arezzo itself is different from the
other Tuscan cities for many reasons, but primarily for its origins: it has always been deeply Etruscan. It was a
"Lucumonia", one of the twelve capitals of the ancient confederation. It lost importance due to the Roman conquest and for
its own internal squabbles over the centuries.
We have selected some locations we suggest you visit while in Arezzo.
#1: Vasari's house. Vasari was a prolific painter and architect. He built this house for himself in 1540, and
decorated the ceiling and walls with portraits of fellow artists, friends and mentors. He also painted himself looking
out of one of the windows.
