WALKING IN THE "MIRACLES FIELD
Let's move to the Duomo or Cathedral. On the frontal part, #7, is buried Buscheto, the first architect.
The four-tied arcaded façade of the building above three porches, #8, was completed under cathedral architect
Rainaldo in the 12th Century. This style, broken up by rhomboid and circular elements occurs in several sacred buildings
in Western Tuscany (Pisan-Lucchesan Style). The inner part of the cathedral is divided in five naves,
#9, decorated with black and white stones, while the columns, one after the other one, create an Islamic
atmosphere. Buscheto was familiar with the Islamic architecture, and the ornate intarsia decoration On the outside of the
building also reflect Islamic influence; many other features of the structure are typical of Northern Italian Romanesque
style. It is this mixture of styles that makes Pisa cathedral architecturally unique. On the left of the central
nave, you can admire the marble Pulpit, #10, sculpted by Giovanni Pisano between 1302 and 1311. The inner
side of the dome, #11, distroyed by a fire in 1959, has been painted again.
The Campanile or Leaning Tower, #12, has seven frames of Columns. At the first level the columns are filled
while at the other levels are open. A fresco at the base level, #13, remind the 1173, year of the beginning of
the works.
