Benefiting wine enthusiasts, the Tuscan region has been divided into fourteen different
"Wine Trails". Each one is named for the wine produced in that specific area.
The most famous Tuscan wine is Chianti, from the region of the same name south of Florence;
different varieties of Chianti are also grown on the hills around Arezzo, Siena and Pisa
(all ruby-red in colour and have a relatively high alcohol content of between 11 and 13
percent). Chianti Classico, from the classic wine area between Florence and Siena,
can be recognized by the distinctive black cockerel (gallo nero) on the label.
Tuscany produces a whole series of other top wines apart from Chianti. Brunello di Montalcino
is one of the best reds in the world, and is produced in the area around Montalcino to the
south of Siena. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, another excellent one, comes from the same area.
As for the whites, the most well-known are Vernaccia, from San Gimignano, and Galestro
(new, light table wine, with a relatively low alcohol contents).
