The boat is anchored in Castiglione della Pescaia, where all the trips start, and the passengers are welcomed on board the
night before the departure. There is always a PADI Scuba dive instructor on
board, and also a naturalistic guide can be requested for water and land excursions.
Castiglione della Pescaia - Formiche Islands (easily done in one day). Navigation time 1 hour and 20 minutes each
way. Castiglione della Pescaia is a medieval village on the southern coast of Tuscany that over the centuries was owned
by Pisa , Naples and Siena, for its beautiful location and access to the water. From here we start our trip towards the
Formiche islands (big, middle, and small), just 11 marine miles out of Castiglione. They are 3 flat little islands in the
middle of the sea (uninhabited, just one has the lighthouse) beautiful for divers because their several different marine
environments (they go from the surface to 150m depth) and several wrecks. These little islands have been on the commercial
route of the Tirrenian sea since the Etruscan Roman period. Due to the fact the at the time these islands were difficult to
see, especially at night, a lot of Roman and Etruscan ships are lying on the bottom of the ocean. A lot of expert divers
sometime go there to try to bring roman jars (amphora) to the surface, "illegally", avoiding the control of the authority.
Depending on the weather conditions, it is possible to dive close to each one of the three. After diving and lunch
(middle afternoon) we are ready to head back. Price: $1400.
